Douglas records another PB to claim sprint double
Holland High School's Shanoya Douglas recorded another personal best at the Carifta Trials at the National Stadium on yesterday's final day.
Following her personal best of 11.06 seconds in winning the girls' Under-20 100 metres on Friday's opening day, Douglas, the defending Carifta Games champion and World Under-20 bronze medallist, was out of the blocks in a flash and sprinted away from her rivals to win in 22.58 seconds.
Natrice East of Wolmer's Girls, like she did in the 100m, was runner-up, in 23.58, with Kimberly Wright of Immaculate Conception third in 24.12.
In the girls' Under-17 200m, 100m champion Rihanna Scott was disqualified for a false start. St Mary High's Sjayon Smith caught leader Daniela Clarke of Edwin Allen close to the finish line to win in 24.32. Clarke was second in 24.42, with third going to Kerion Jarrett of Maggotty High in 25.20.
In the boys' Under-17 and Under-20 200m, the top three finishers in both age groups ran personal bests. Mario Ross of Wolmer's Boys' stopped the clock at 21.18, as Tyler Morgan of Jamaica College (JC) was second in 21.35 and Javane Clayton of Calabar third in 21.54.
Sanjay Seymore, who finished second in the 100m, captured the boys' Under-20 200m in 20.95 ahead of Deaqoun Maragh of Camperdown High, 21.06, and Elijah Smikle of JC, 21.16.
Earlier, Alyssa Carty of St Jago High and Maria Crossfield of Edwin Allen won the girls' Under-17 and Under-20 400m hurdles finals, respectively, in personal bests.
Carty, the Carifta Games bronze medallist last year, blazed out of lane eight to win going away from her rivals in 59.89, finishing ahead of Imani Lowe of Immaculate Conception, 1:01.47, and Sha-Jay Davis of Alpha Academy, 1:01.72.
CLOSE FINISH
The Under-20 event produced a very close finish, with both athletes coming off the final barrier together and battling to the finish line. Maria Crossfield of Edwin Allen prevailed in 58.71 ahead of Hydel's Natasha Fletcher, who clocked 58.73. Third went to Shaneca Harris of Port Antonio High in a personal best 59.09.
Oneil Lawrence of JC won the boys' Under-17 400m hurdles in a personal best 52.46. Kavian Minott of Hydel was second in 52.85, with Raneil Burke of St Jago third in 53.02.
Hydel High's Robert Miller, the defending Carifta Games Under-20 champion, was successful in the event, winning in 50.53s. Jahvannie Tyrell of Kingston College was second in 51.50, with Rojay Black of JC third in 52.49.
In the female Under-17 800m, Aneika Lowe of Edwin Allen won in 2:13.67, while in the Under-20 equivalent, Kevongaye Fowler of Edwin Allen won in a personal best 2:07.04 ahead of Keyah Anderson of The Queen's School in 2:10.39.
HISTORY
Markland Williams of Denbigh High created history for his school with a first win at the Carifta Trials, taking the boys' Under-17 title in a massive personal best 1:55.03 ahead of Luke Plummer of Sydney Pagon, 1:57.05.
There were some outstanding results in the sprint hurdles, led by Tashana Godfrey of Edwin Allen in the girls' Under-17 100m hurdles She won in 13.00 seconds flat ahead of Macaelo Gordon of Alpha, 13.47.
It was a 1-2 finish for Wolmer's Girls in the Under-20 event as Tiana Marshall won in a personal best 12.97 ahead of Ackelia Bell, who clocked 13.2.
Wolmer's Boys' Mark Daniel Allen won the boys' Under-17 110m hurdles in a personal best 13.57 ahead of Brandon Bennett of Kingston College, 13.67.
It was also a 1-2 finish for St Jago High's boys in the Under-20 event as Romario Jibbidon won in 13.37 ahead of Marquies Page, 13.60.
