Cops say CCTV caught security guard allegedly stealing over $2M from ATM
A security officer accused of helping himself to more than $2 million from an ATM he was assigned to service has been slapped with a larceny charge after the alleged theft was reportedly caught on camera.
Charged is 55-year-old Terrance Austin of Kintyre Road, Kingston 6.
According to police reports, a financial institution discovered discrepancies involving funds that had allegedly gone missing between January and May this year and alerted representatives of the security company contracted to service the location.
An internal probe was launched and investigators reportedly uncovered evidence pointing to Austin, who was responsible for clearing the ATM and cheque deposit vault.
It is alleged that Austin removed $2,045,300 from the ATM while carrying out his duties.
Investigators say the alleged theft was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the ATM area.
The matter was reported to the police on June 11, and Austin was subsequently arrested.
He was formally charged with larceny as a servant on June 16 following a caution statement given in the presence of his attorney.
His court date is being finalised.
