Distin aims high for Zagreb meet
Commonwealth Games high jump champion Lamara Distin will be one of four Jamaicans competing at the three-day World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet, which begins today in Zagreb, Croatia.
Competition today will be limited to the men's shot put, while Friday's second day will feature just one event - the women's high jump, which includes Distin.
It will be her first overseas competition this season, and the Jamaican is looking forward to the meet.
"This is my first time in Zagreb and my first competition abroad this season. Even though Jamaica is better known for sprinters, I never doubted my decision," Distin said at the pre-meet press conference.
"My form is good, there is no limit - the rest depends on the moment," she added.
The 25-year-old Distin is the only athlete in the line-up who has cleared 2.00 metres. She will face off against Serbia's Angelina Topic, the European outdoor silver medallist, and Jana Koscak of Croatia, who has a season best 1.91m.
The three other Jamaicans at the meet will see action on Saturday. Shanieka Ricketts will lead the charge as she goes for her second win of the season in the women's triple jump. Tajay Gayle will compete in the men's long jump, while Omar McLeod will line up in the men's 110m hurdles.
Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred will make her second appearance this season, in the women's 200m.
Alfred, who clocked a personal best of 21.88 seconds in her first outing a month ago in Gainesville, Florida, will have her sights set on the meet record of 22.04 seconds, set by Christine Mboma in 2021.
