Following an eventful 2025 season, Olympian Chad Wright has already started his preparations to break into new territory this year as he aims to compete in both the discus throw and weightlifting events at this year's Commonwealth Games.

Wright, who is best known for his efforts in the discus circle, has been competing competitively in weightlifting for the past few years.

He is aiming to combine his two passions at a single championship come July at the Commonwealth Games.

"I would say my goal is competing at a major competition for the two different sports and that would be at the Commonwealth Games," he said.

Although a lofty ambition, it is not out of reach for the two-time national discus champion.

He has proven his quality on the global stage in the discus throw, having competed at four World Athletics Championships and one Olympic Games.

In weightlifting, Wright has also seen much success which culminated with him being named the Athlete of the Year for the sport at the 2025 RJRGLEANER National Sports Awards.

He explained that he has began preparations to compete in both disciplines and is ready to shoulder the intense workload.

"Training has been going well. I'm just waiting for this training cycle to end to fully see what I'm capable of," he explained.

"The workload has been difficult, but manageable, and I've just been splitting it up in between mornings and evenings," Wright said.

"I'd say it is the same approach as last year. We work from what the dates are for the competition and work backwards in terms of the programming and we just make changes where necessary."

LESSONS LEARNT

Wright said he will approach this season with a lot of lessons learnt from his 2025 season.

He finished 10th in his qualifying group at the Tokyo World Championships last year with a best effort of 62.87 metres.

He then closed out the year by qualifying for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in weightlifting with a personal best of 140kg in the snatch competition and 172kg in the clean and jerk section.

Wright said last year's eventful campaign has taught him there is always room for improvement and the importance of preparation.

"I would say it was an eventful season seeing that I did two sports in 2025. I'm happy about how my performance went going into Tokyo, not so happy about competition in Tokyo, but it leaves room for improvement," he explained.

"As a professional athlete it really comes down to preparation go leading into a major championship and how to adapt your warm-up for the conditions you have to face."
